Training for the Half and Full Marathon
Join us at 6 a.m. every Saturday morning begining in October until race weekend at the Trak Shak in Homewood for free group training supported by the Trak Shak and the Birmingham Track Club (BTC). Runners and walkers of all skill levels are welcome. The group is led by the BTC Long Run Coordinator, Monica Henley assisted by running veterans, Alex Morrow and Jeff Martinez. (Stay tuned for exact beginning day in October.)
A beginner-level 20 week marathon and 19 week half marathon training schedule is provided with room to build in cross training, speed work, tempo or hills to fit your skill level. We recommend that you be able to complete a 5k or can run 10 miles per week to begin the half marathon training and that you can complete a 10K, or run 15 miles per week to begin the marathon training.
Two Mercedes Marathon Course Preview Runs will take place in January/February and will coincide with your half and full training schedule. Each run leaves from Boutwell Auditorium at 6:30 a.m. It's a great time to experience the course with water/GU stations and hot treats afterwards in the lobby of Boutwell.
Don't forget to register for the Regions SuperHero 5k to shake your legs out the day before the big race. We can't wait to see you at the finish line in February!
